Precious Moments, the cute collectibles with a cult following, have adorned the shelves of grandmothers across the country for decades.
The delicate figurines come in a different design for every occasion, and are typically gifted to commemorate a birthday, holiday, or other significant life event. Though the popularity of Precious Moments has waned in recent years, one man has given new life to the iconic collectibles by transforming them into something else entirely.
Canadian artist Keith Busher the creator of “Precious Mutations” uses his sculpting skills to turn the tiny ceramic dolls into Tᴇʀʀɪғʏɪɴɢ ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀs.
After feeling guilty about his kids spending so much time watching television, Keith took his daughters to a thrift store “to seek out inspiration for a new creative project.”
“We went out in search of something we could upcycle and I got stuck in the figurine section looking at all these uber sweet, sometimes awkward figurines,” he tells. “I thought that with a little tweaking, they could become quite humorous and much more desirable.”
While Keith admits his subject matter “may be weird,” he takes his sculpting very seriously and will spend weeks or months on any given project.
“It’s meditative for me,” he explains. “Once a piece grabs my attention. . . I plot out the most strategic way to achieve my vision.”
“I like to encourage others to create as opposed to keeping my secrets to myself,” he says.
Keith realizes that not everyone will be a fan of his art, and he’s okay with that. Whether you love it or hate it, we can all agree on one thing: It’s hard to look away.
